ESLAO ESL Level 1 — Beginning Communication
The entry level of Ontario’s five-step ESL ladder: everyday survival English, basic sentence patterns and the confidence to speak. Placement is by assessment, not age — starting at the right level is what makes the ladder fast.

Where it leads
Leads to ESLBO. Each ESL level is a full credit that counts toward the 30 the diploma needs.
PREREQUISITE
Placed by initial assessment.
Assessment & credit
Standard Ontario assessment: 70% coursework, 30% final evaluation. Completion ships as an official transcript, OUAC-listed and recognized by public and private schools.
How we run it
Small groups, online or in person (Markham campus); semester, summer and winter intakes, scheduled around the student’s Top 6 plan.
