ENL1W Grade 9 English
The de-streamed Grade 9 English course (formerly ENG1D). Beyond short fiction and first essays, the 2023 curriculum leans hard into transferable skills — digital media literacy, oral communication, and reading a genuinely diverse range of voices.
Inside the course
Short fiction and the elements of narrative
Paragraph craft to the first structured essay
Oral communication: discussion and presentation skills
Digital media literacy and evaluating online sources
Diverse and Indigenous voices in Canadian writing
Where it leads
Leads to ENG2D. For newcomers, an ESL placement first (ESLCO/ESLDO) then bridging in is usually faster than struggling through ENL1W directly.
PREREQUISITE
None — the Grade 9 entry point.
Assessment & credit
Standard Ontario assessment: 70% coursework, 30% final evaluation. Completion ships as an official transcript, OUAC-listed and recognized by public and private schools.
How we run it
Small groups, online or in person (Markham campus); semester, summer and winter intakes, scheduled around the student’s Top 6 plan.
