On the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology, Alex felt the limitations of conventional navigation apps while accompanying a visually impaired senior. He integrated ultrasonic sensing and deep learning to develop a device that could construct obstacle maps in real-time and provide voice navigation. After multiple experiments, the system achieved over 90% recognition rate, helping several visually impaired students navigate the entire campus independently. Alex used innovative technology to light the way forward and added practical highlights to his Rice application.
