OSSD course planning: fitting 30 credits into a workable timetable

A course plan has to satisfy three things at once: the compulsory structure for graduation, the prerequisites of the target program, and the student’s current English and academic level. When they conflict, the order is graduation first, program second, average optimization last.

Five principles behind a good plan

Do not back-load

Grades 9 and 10 are lighter, which makes them the window for English and the foundational subjects. Pushing the difficulty into Grade 12 stacks the risk onto the one year whose marks matter most.

Back-plan the prerequisite chain

MCV4U needs MHF4U, which needs MCR3U, which needs MPM2D. Delay any link and the whole chain slips a semester — the single most common planning accident.

English before everything

English sets the ceiling on every other course: a student who cannot parse the question cannot show their math. Concentrate the ESL stage rather than dragging it alongside core subjects for three years.

Keep swappable slots

Directions change. Keeping one or two courses that count either way in Grade 11 — MDM4U or ICS3U, for instance — means a change of direction does not restart the plan.

Be realistic about load

Four courses a term is the normal rhythm, and contests, testing and activities fill what remains. Before adding a course, ask whether the existing ones still hit their target marks.

ESL credits count as electives; part of the four compulsory English credits can typically be met by ESLDO and ESLEO, with the rest coming from ENG3U, ENG4U and similar.

Engineering requires MCV4U and SPH4U, usually with SCH4U; for computer science, ICS4U is a strong signal though not always a hard requirement.

Business programs generally accept MDM4U as the math credit; the most selective — Ivey AEO, Rotman — add supplementary applications and higher averages.

Completion paths by entry grade

Entering in Grade 10 · about 3 years

Year one concentrates ESL and the Grade 10 compulsories, year two moves into Grade 11 U-level courses, and year three completes the six Grade 12 U/M courses. The most comfortable pace, with real room for contests and activities.

Entering in Grade 11 · about 2 years

ESL runs alongside the Grade 11 core, with Grade 12 completed in year two. Watch the chain: MCR3U must land in year one, or MHF4U and MCV4U slide into a third year.

Entering in Grade 12 · about 1 year

A summer of Grade 11 prerequisites and ESL, then the six 4U/M courses within the school year. There is no slack on this path; it suits students already at ENG3U level with a solid academic base.

How a mark is actually built

A course mark is typically 70% term evaluation — assignments, quizzes, lab reports, group projects, presentations — and 30% a final evaluation, which may be an exam, an essay or a culminating project. A dozen-plus graded moments a term, each one landing in the final number.

For students arriving from a Chinese-curriculum school, the adjustment is rarely the content — it is how marks are lost. Late submission, wrong format and sloppy citation each cost points where the previous system might only have issued a reminder. Building submission habits in the first two months raises marks more than extra practice does.

Common questions

How many courses can be taken at once?

Four is standard. Students accelerating add summer or evening courses, but past five at once the odds of marks slipping rise sharply — confirm the current courses are steady before adding another.

Can the direction change mid-way?

Yes, and the cost depends on how late. A Grade 11 change usually only reshuffles electives; a Grade 12 change often means a missing prerequisite and a summer or an extra semester to fill it.

Do universities see a repeated course?

The Ontario transcript shows repeats. Most universities count the highest mark toward the Top 6, but the policy is each school’s own — some, and some competitive programs, read every attempt. A pattern of repeats certainly gets read, and passing well the first time is far cheaper than planning to repeat.

Are online credits treated differently?

No — the transcript carries the same course code and credit, provided the school is inspected and credit-granting. Ontario’s own graduation requirements include at least two online credits.
