Academic planning

The gap in application season opens years earlier. Academic planning does one thing: it translates a target program’s requirements into course selections, grade targets and activities for each year — so Grade 12 is execution, not rescue.

Top GTA private schools admit few students, on a fall cycle: most close applications in December-January, with SSAT and interviews prepared well ahead. A private-school application is a year-long project, not a form.

Canadian universities

Ontario applications run through OUAC’s single Undergraduate Application (the old 101/105 split merged in 2023): your background is assigned to Group A (typically current Ontario high-school students on the OSSD track) or Group B (most others) — the application itself makes the ruling, and the two groups run different deadlines and transcript flows. The Top 6 average is the core, but competitive programs read far more: Waterloo’s AIF, UBC’s Personal Profile, video interviews for business.

About the OSSD

The OSSD is Ontario’s high-school diploma: 30 credits (17 compulsory + 13 elective for students entering Grade 9 from fall 2024; 18 + 12 for earlier cohorts), 40 community-service hours, the OSSLT literacy test, and at least two online-learning credits (parents may opt out); students who start Grade 9 in fall 2025 or later also meet a financial-literacy requirement inside Grade 10 Career Studies, effective 2026-27. For admissions it is among the most widely recognized secondary credentials in North America.

OSSD across North America

Inspected online schools let students outside Ontario earn the OSSD, entering OUAC’s Undergraduate Application as Group B — or US systems — with an Ontario transcript. For students whose home curriculum reads poorly abroad — or who need a grade reset — it is a well-travelled route.

US admissions are holistic: the transcript is table stakes, while essays, the activities list, recommendations and interviews tell the story. The Common App essay plus per-school supplements demand far more writing than Canadian applications.
