Adult ESL: start with where you get stuck
For many adults, the problem with English isn't that they never learned it. It's that they can't use it when it counts. The table below lists the situations this course is written for. See which row sounds like you.
| Where you are now | Where it breaks down |
|---|---|
| You recently moved to Canada | You can't get a full sentence out when shopping, at the doctor's office or talking with your child's teacher |
| You work full time | You can read the technical material in your field, but speaking in meetings and writing emails feels uncertain |
| You learned English for exams | You remember the grammar, then freeze as soon as you have to speak |
| Your child is taking English classes | You want to go back to the beginning and learn it properly yourself |
| You follow some everyday conversation | You lose track when people speak fast or have an accent you're not used to |
English for newcomers: the moments you have to speak
When you first arrive, the hard part usually isn't a test. It's the grocery store, the clinic and the parent-teacher meeting. Saying one complete sentence and being understood makes those days a lot easier.
Workplace English is the other common gap. If you can already get through documents but feel unsure in a meeting or an email, this course is written for you too.
Complete beginners can enrol
Adults who want to learn English from the beginning, in a structured way, are one of the groups this course names. You don't need a certain level before you start.
Is your child learning English too?
Plenty of parents decide to work on their own English while their child is in class. For teenagers there is the ESL English course for Grades 7-10, and for younger children the Grade 3-5 English group class.
