An ESL class for Grade 7 to 10 students new to Canada and placed in ESL at school.
It works on the four places these students most often get stuck: following a teacher who speaks at normal speed, getting through the assigned reading, writing a paragraph in written rather than spoken English, and speaking up in class and group work. The aim is to move into the regular English class as soon as possible.
Each class is 60 minutes.

This ESL class suits students in Grades 7 to 10 whose English is still the thing standing between them and their schoolwork.
- Newcomer families who have recently arrived in Canada and whose child is not keeping up with the school English class
- Grade 7 or Grade 8 students who cannot follow a teacher speaking at normal speed and never finish the assigned reading
- Grade 9 or Grade 10 students who can talk but freeze when asked to write a paragraph or analyse a text
- Students whose written English still sounds like speech, with tense errors and direct-translation phrasing
- Students who understand more than they will say out loud, and need class discussion practice before they will speak up
