ESL Basic English for Grades 7-10 | STEMRise

What this course is

ESL-Basic is the entry level of STEMRise's English as a Second Language stream for students in Grades 7 to 10. It is for students who are still building the everyday English they need for school in Ontario — following a lesson, reading a class text, writing a paragraph and speaking up in a group.

Who it suits

Students in Grade 7 to Grade 10 who are new to studying in English, or who understand more than they can yet say and write. No prior level test result is assumed; the course starts from basic reading, writing, listening and speaking.

What students work on

• Core vocabulary and sentence patterns used in school subjects and daily conversation
• Reading short texts for the main idea and key details
• Writing clear sentences and short paragraphs with correct basic grammar
• Listening to classroom instructions, explanations and short recordings
• Speaking practice — answering questions, describing, and taking part in short exchanges

Format

Teacher-led lessons with guided practice in all four skills, plus feedback on each student's speaking and written work so the next lesson targets what they are still missing.
